"I read a great review on FPN of Brian Gray's work and was really impressed. I had never really given much thought to turned pens until seeing Brian's work. I immediately e mailed Brian with a series of questions and within a short time I received a detailed and helpful response along with some ideas. If his detailed and pleasant response is indicative of the quality of his pens then he has an excellent product indeed. I was impressed because it seems that with his and the buyer's cooperation you can build a pen to your specs within a range. Many options to choose from. The fact that he offers quality gold nibs helps a lot as well. The options can be intimidating but in a good way.

Anyway wanted to let the community know about my brief pleasant interaction with Brian. I wish all pen sellers were as responsive."

"I will add to this review to say that I just received a "Beaumont" model from Brian in black ebonite and you couldn't deal with a nicer fellow.  If you wish to add an ebonite pen to your collection, you can do so from Pencraft for a fraction of the price of entry from any of the more "mainstream" pen companies."

You will be pleased, I am betting, when you receive your Herald.  I received the exact same one complete with Bexley f nib. This is not a review, more of a preview.  The ebonite is sweet- Brian mentions on his site that the Sailor King of Pen provided his design with some inspiration and I understand why.

I have a King of Pen, and the Herald is quite a respectable cover. The nib, as you expect, is smooth, and Brian mentioned in his accompanying letter that he adjusted it to his standard which is fine by me. The pen is long, but well balanced- I have not had time this weekend to write extensively with it, but it will not be the distributed weight of the pen that tires me- the pen is not "light," I would consider it somewhere between light and medium- a nice handful.

Craftsmanship is fine, the ebonite (the red/black) is interestingly striated and emits that wonderful sulphury odor when rubbed.

All in all- a fine pen- plus Brian is a fine person to work with- listens and expedites- what's not to like? Hope your Herald is as much of a pleasure as mine.

The pen is absolute excellence. The finish is beautiful, the size is ideal, and the shape is utterly appealing. I enjoy the compromise between size and weight; I find this large pen to be substantial in the hand, but not heavy.
